Certified Emergency Nurse Test

The Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) test is a certification for emergency nurses who are dedicated to their profession and are interested in furthering their knowledge in the field. Certification is not required to become an emergency nurse, but it often leads to salary increases and employment opportunities. It also allows you to show others your professionalism and expertise and gain the respect of your peers.

In order to obtain certification, you must pass the CEN test. The test is computer-based and consists of 175 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in a three-hour time period. The questions focus on many types of emergencies such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, gynecological, neurological, maxillofacial, orthopedic, psycho/social, respiratory, shock, toxicological, and communicable diseases that an emergency nurse could encounter. Each of these fields also contains many possible diseases associated with it. Nurses will be tested on professional issues, such as ethics, research, pain management, patient consent, risk management, triage, discharge, and patient safety. The test is broad and encompasses many aspects of emergencies. Outlines, study guides, and sample questions are available to help you understand what to expect on the exam.

In order to gain entry to the CEN test, you must first register for it. Registration can be completed online with a credit card or through the mail with a check. You will need to complete an application, which asks for your personal information, RN license number, test you want to take, payment method, and signature. To be eligible to apply, you must hold a current, unrestricted nursing license and have two years of relevant experience. You must also pay a fee to take the test. The fee is $220 if you are a member of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). Non-members must pay $360. Once you receive confirmation that you are eligible to take the CEN test, you must schedule your exam and take it within 90 days. Tests are first-come, first-served, so it’s always best to schedule as soon as you can so you take the test at the date and time of your choice. The CEN test can be scheduled online or by the telephone. You are allowed to reschedule the test once, as long you still take the test within the 90-day window, without incurring any additional charges.

On the day of your CEN test, be prepared to present two forms of identification, with one bearing your photo. Both forms must include your signature. You will not be allowed to bring any belongings into the testing area. Paper and pencils will be provided for you. You will not be allowed to eat, drink, or ask questions during the CEN test. No breaks are scheduled, but you are allowed to take breaks as needed.

Once you complete the CEN test, you will immediately receive your results. The testing supervisor will provide you with a score report, which shows if you passed or failed. You will receive a total raw score, as well as a score for each content area. If you pass the test, you will receive your certification within six weeks. The certification must be renewed every four years. If you fail, you must wait 90 days to re-apply and pay another application fee.
