Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators Test

The Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) test is required for public school teachers in Georgia. The purpose of the GACE test is to assess the knowledge of prospective teachers and ensure that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively teach students. The test is aligned with national and state standards. The GACE program consists of five separate tests: basic skills, content, professional pedagogy, educational leadership, and paraprofessional. You may not be required to take all the components of the GACE test, but you will need to verify this with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

You must take many steps to register for the GACE test.

  • First, you must determine which tests you need to take. Next, find your closest testing center and select an available date and time that fits your schedule.
  • You will then need to select your mode of registration for the GACE test. Regular and late registration can be completed online or via mail. Emergency registration must be done online or by telephone.
  • You will need to include personal information, such as your name, address, date of birth, social security number, and contact information on the application.
  • You will also be required to answer some background questions, such as your highest level of education and the reason for taking the GACE test.

Before submitting your application, you must pay the appropriate fees. The base registration fee is $25; the basic skills assessment costs $25; the paraprofessional assessment costs $35; and the professional pedagogy, content, and education leadership assessments cost $70 each. The GACE test is available primarily in pencil-and-paper format. However, some sections of the test are available as computer-based, but cost an extra $30 to take.

Once your registration for the GACE test has been confirmed, you will receive an admission ticket for each test for which you are registered. The admission ticket shows your testing center, date, time, test, and ID number. On the day of the test, you will need to bring your admission ticket and valid ID with photograph and signature. It is also important to bring several sharpened No. 2 pencils, as none will be supplied at the testing center. There are no scheduled breaks during the GACE test, but you are allowed to take breaks as needed. The clock will continue to run, however.

If you choose computer-based testing, your unofficial score will be available to you after the GACE test. For paper-and-pencil administrations, your score is available online about 30 days after the test. The GACE test is scored on a scale from 100 to 300, with 220 being the passing score. If a candidate has to take more than one component of the GACE test, they must pass all tests to become certified. If you registered online, you have the option of having your GACE test score e-mailed to you when it becomes available. If you fail the test, your score report will include a detailed performance analysis, which shows your score for each section, plus the percentage of questions you answer correctly. If you fail one component of the test, you only have to retake that component. You have unlimited tries to pass a test. However, you must re-register and pay another fee each time. Also, for computer-based testing, you must wait 30 days between retakes.
