It is important to remember that there are two main ways in which you can motivate yourself. The first way is through intrinsic motivation, which is a motivational method in which you try to convince yourself that you should carry out a task because you will receive a feeling of satisfaction or joy after you accomplish it. In other words, intrinsic motivation refers to any method of motivation in which you try to convince yourself that you should accomplish a task because it will make you feel good. Intrinsic motivation, as a result, can be an extremely effective tool when you need to accomplish a task that is satisfying even though there is no obvious reward. However, it is important to note that intrinsic motivation is more difficult to use than extrinsic motivation, and you may want to know a couple of things about intrinsic motivation before you try to use it.
- First, intrinsic motivation is completely based on the way you feel after you accomplish something. This means that you have to figure out what it is that actually makes you feel good about accomplishing a task before you try to use intrinsic motivation. For example, if you’re trying to take notes so you can do better on your next test, you have to ask yourself, “Do I need to take notes to feel like I’ve accomplished something?”; “Do I need to study my notes to feel like I’ve accomplished something?”; “Do I need to pass a test to feel like I’ve accomplished something?”; “Do I need to get a lot done to feel like I’ve accomplished something?”; “Do I need to actually learn something to feel like I’ve accomplished something?” and/or any of a number of other similar questions. This will allow you to determine if a particular task will give you the good feeling you’re looking for, and if not, it will help you link the task that you don’t find satisfying to another task that you do find satisfying.
- Secondly, intrinsic motivation is highly goal-oriented. This is because people feel good when they accomplish something, and, to use intrinsic motivation, you have to have something to accomplish. In terms of note taking, this typically means that you need to make a list of the tasks you need to accomplish to have a good set of notes, such as writing down all of the key points that were included in the lecture, completing your homework, revising your notes, reorganizing your notes, or studying a certain amount each day.
