National League of Nursing Test

National League of Nursing TestThe National League of Nursing (NLN) is a membership organization for those in the nursing field. Besides providing networking opportunities and faculty development programs, the NLN also offers testing services. The NLN offers many achievement tests and practice assessment series tests. However, the most common NLN tests are the registered nurse (RN) and practical nurse (PN) pre-admission exam (PAX). The PAX is required by most RN programs in order to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of prospective students.

Both the RN and PN PAX versions of the NLN test contain 214 multiple-choice questions. The test is given via paper and pencil. It assesses a student’s math, verbal, and science knowledge at a high school level.

  • The math portion contains 40 questions about fractions, decimals, integers, conversions, algebra, and geometry.
  • The verbal portion includes 60 questions about reading comprehension, word knowledge, and critical thinking.
  • The science portion of the NLN test contains 60 questions and tests a student’s ability in the areas of human anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • The PN NLN test also includes area section on first aid and health.

Depending to which nursing program you are applying, you may need to meet eligibility requirements before taking the NLN test. Some programs may require that you take certain biology, chemistry, or English classes before taking the test. If you feel you meet the requirements, you may apply for the NLN test. Registration must be completed online. You will need to create an account using a user ID and a password. You will be required to enter your contact information and will then select the state in which you would like the take the NLN test and the testing center of your choice. You will then be required to pay for the exam before your registration can be submitted. The fee is about $60, but may vary depending on where the test is administered.

On the day of your NLN test, you should plan to arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes early to allow time to check-in. You will need to bring a copy of your exam confirmation, several sharpened pencils (none will be provided at the testing center), and a valid ID that contains a photo and a signature. You will not be allowed to bring calculators. You will be given one hour to complete each section, so plan to be at the testing center for at least three hours.

Your NLN test scores will be available immediately after the exam. Note that each school sets its own admission standards. Generally, in order to pass, you must be ranked in at least the 50th percentile in each of the three subject areas and obtain an overall test score of at least 110. The NLN test score report may contain several scores: raw score (total number of questions answered correctly), percentile score (percentage of students who received a raw score lower than the score you received), percentage score (percentage of questions answered correctly), and standard score (raw score transformed into a number above or below the norms group). If you fail, you can retake the NLN test as often as necessary, but you must wait six months between testing dates.
