Tape Recorders

One of the things that you have to do to take good notes is to make sure that you record everything that you need to know. In most cases, this simply means that you have to write down the key points that your teacher or professor discusses during class. However, it is important to note that there may be some situations in which your teacher or professor is just talking so fast and/or covering so much material that you simply can’t keep up. If this is the case and you find yourself in a situation in which you can’t keep up with your instructor, one of the options that you may consider is using a tape recorder. A tape recorder can be extremely useful when you’re trying to keep up with an instructor that is simply moving too fast for you, but there are several things about tape recorders that you should keep in mind.

  • First, it is always important to ask your teacher or professor if you can use a tape recorder in class before you use it. Some people just don’t like being taped, and you have to make sure that your instructor doesn’t have a problem with you taping him or her. In fact, you should try to ask your teacher or professor for permission before you use a tape recorder, try to make it clear that you need the tape recorder because you can’t write fast enough, and that you are only planning to use the recordings for your note taking. This is important because you have to convince your teacher or professor that you’re not trying to imply or prove that he or she is incompetent or that he or she talks too fast.
  • Secondly, try to make sure that you’re actually using a decent tape recorder and that you know how to use it. This is important because the whole point of using a tape recorder is to have a complete record of everything that your teacher or professor says during class. This means that a tape recorder that garbles everything or picks up so much noise that you can’t possibly understand it is useless. Finally, try to make sure that you’re using your tape recorder as a note taking aid and not your primary note taking method. This is important because your tape recorder will only be able to help you find the key points that were discussed in class if you actually take the time to go through the tape and write the key points down.
